What Do Guns & Sugar Have in Common?

They’re ubiquitous. They’re easy to purchase. And they are both destroying our collective health.

  • America leads the world in civilian gun ownership and gun homicides. According to Pew Research, nearly 75% of gun owners say they “could not imagine life without a gun”

  • Since 1968, the number of Americans who have died from gunfire is greater than the tally of all Americans lost to war since (and including) the Revolutionary War (PolitiFact 2013)

  • The United States leads the rest of the world on average daily sugar consumption per capita (Washington Post as quoted by Diabetes Council, 2018); and we consume over ten times as much of it annually as we did a century ago (Avail Clinical Research as quoted by Diabetes Council, 2018)

  • Sugar intake has a direct correlation to body weight. It is known to suppress the immune system, accelerate aging and increase the risk of dying from heart disease if it constitutes over 25% of daily caloric intake (multiple sources cited by Diabetes Council as of 2018)
