The War on Children
From policy to politics, funding to fundamental beliefs, consumer trends to the child as consumer, children in the United States are growing up in an environment that is steadily eroding their prospects, damaging to their health, and harmful to the future of us all. There’s no one “root cause” or prevailing condition that explains the way we got here nor a single blinking “exit” sign to illuminate the way out. But one thing is certain: children are growing up in a world that bears little resemblance to that of their parents and grandparents, and how we prepare them for it will impact almost everyone alive today.
When Davonte was asked what he wanted for his birthday, he didn’t ask for a big celebration, he only said, “I’m glad I made it to see 18.” He was shot and killed less than one week after turning 18. He had previously spoken before the Baltimore City Council on youth violence prevention.

Highly contagious, very preventable, measles is now a major concern for many parents of young and school age children.
More than a quarter million children lost health insurance this year — the first decline in over a decade.
There’s a type of magnet called a “rare-earth” toy magnet that is very tiny and extremely powerful — up to 30x more than a regular kitchen magnet. They are commercially available under various brand names and while they are ostensibly intended for adults, they are very attractive to children, many of whom have swallowed them….These magnets are so strong that they can literally pull two different areas of the intestines together, requiring invasive surgery.
